Mahjong Tile Care

Maintaining your Mahjong tiles will help preserve their appearance and the enjoyment of your game.
Here's how to care for them.

Avoid Soaking or Washing
Never submerge your Mahjong tiles in water. This can damage the paint and the tile material itself.

Gentle Wiping is Best
Clean your tiles by gently wiping them with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Think of how you would clean a TV or smartphone screen.

Dry Immediately
After wiping with a damp cloth, always use a separate, dry cloth to thoroughly dry the tiles.

Mild Cleaner (Use with Caution)
If necessary, a very mild household cleaner (like those found in supermarkets) can be used for stubborn marks. Important: Do not spray the cleaner directly onto the tiles. Instead, apply a small amount to a soft cloth and then gently wipe the affected area. Follow immediately with a dry cloth.

Paint Wear is Natural
Please be aware that the paint on the engraved symbols is subject to wear and tear through regular use. This is a normal characteristic and is not covered under warranty.

Storing Your Tiles
Avoid Direct Sunlight. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause acrylic tiles to fade or become brittle over time. Store your Mahjong set in a shaded area.

Understanding Acrylic Mahjong Sets and Water

It's important to understand how water can affect your acrylic Mahjong set.

The General Facts About Acrylic and Water

Acrylic is Water-Resistant
As a type of plastic, acrylic generally does not absorb water easily.
Water Can Be Used for Cleaning
You can typically clean acrylic surfaces with water without immediate damage to the material itself.
Why We Advise Against Washing Mahjong Tiles
While acrylic itself is water-resistant, several factors make washing Mahjong tiles risky.

  • Water-Soluble Paint/Ink
The paint or ink used for the symbols can dissolve, fade, bleed, or peel with excessive or prolonged water exposure.
  • Trapped Water in Engravings
Water can seep into the fine lines of the engravings and become trapped, potentially causing damage over time, especially if not dried meticulously.
  • Potential for Layered Construction
Some tiles might have a layered construction or underlying materials that could be negatively affected by water.

Therefore, careful management of water exposure is crucial for maintaining your Mahjong tiles.

Understanding Acrylic Mahjong Sets and Sunlight

Here's what you should know about the effects of sunlight on your acrylic Mahjong set.

The General Facts About Acrylic and UV Radiation

UV Degradation
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can break down the polymer structure of acrylic, a process called photodegradation.
Potential Effects of Prolonged Sunlight Exposure
  • Yellowing
Acrylic can sometimes develop a yellow tint over extended periods of UV exposure.
  • Increased Brittleness
The material can become more fragile and susceptible to cracking or chipping.
  • Color Fading
If your acrylic is colored or the tiles have printed designs, the colors may fade.
Variations in Acrylic Quality
  • Higher Quality
Superior acrylic may offer better resistance to UV degradation.
  • UV Stabilizers
Some acrylic is manufactured with additives that significantly enhance its resistance to sunlight. However, not all acrylic products include this protection.

A Note on Using Sunlight for Drying
While exposing your Mahjong set to sunlight might seem like a way to dry it or kill germs, we advise against it due to the potential risks of UV degradation. If you choose to do so, it is at your own risk.

Why We May Remove Factory Wrap for Inspection

To ensure you receive a Mahjong set free from manufacturing defects and to provide you with peace of mind, we often conduct thorough inspections before delivery.
  • Inspection Process
This process typically involves removing the factory wrapping, especially for our higher-quality sets (e.g., MY Mahjong, HK Mahjong).
  • Lower-Grade Sets
While we aim to inspect all sets, it may not be feasible to individually check every lower-grade set from China (e.g., "QQ" mahjong). In these cases, we prioritize transparency by providing detailed quality information and images to you before your purchase, allowing you to make an informed decision.

Mahjong Table Care

Taking care of your Mahjong table will help maintain its appearance and functionality for years of enjoyment.

Tabletop Mat Cleaning

The tabletop mat is crucial for smooth gameplay and requires specific care. Mats are typically made of a fabric material, which can trap dirt and stains.

When the Mat Gets Dirty

Dirt and stains can become embedded in the mat's fibers, affecting both its appearance and potentially hindering tile movement.

  • Multi-Purpose Spray-On Cleaning Solution (Use with Caution)
While convenient, some cleaning solutions may negatively impact the mat's smooth surface. Test any solution in an inconspicuous area first.

  • Damp Cloth for Light Cleaning
A slightly damp cloth can be used for light surface cleaning. Be aware that this may not remove all embedded stains. Ensure the mat is completely dry before playing to prevent tiles from sticking.
