The Role of the Wind Indicator in Mahjong
In traditional Mahjong, the Wind Indicator is an essential table piece that anchors the entire match. Beyond tracking rounds, it can also be rolled like a die to determine the starting Host ( 庄家 ).
1. Cultural Order : East Comes First
-
Unlike Western navigation which starts with North ( North, South, East, West ), Chinese tradition places sunrise and new beginnings first : East ( 东 ), South ( 南 ), West ( 西 ), and North ( 北 ). Every Mahjong match starts in the East round.
2. The Double Wind Advantage : Double Bonus Scoring
When your individual Seat Wind matches the active Round Wind ( Prevailing Wind ), holding a triplet of that wind tile grants a Double Bonus, one bonus for the table wind, and one for your seat.
-
Round 1 ( East Round ):
The Host ( East ) holds the matching position. Melding a triplet of East tiles earns a double bonus. Other players who meld East earn 1 bonus.
-
Round 2 ( South Round ):
The player seated at South holds the matching position and earns the double bonus for South tiles.
-
Round 3 ( West Round ):
The player seated at West holds the matching position and earns the double bonus for West tiles.
-
Round 4 ( North Round ):
The player seated at North holds the matching position and earns the double bonus for North tiles.
3. Match Progression & Table Etiquette
-
The 4-Round Tradition : A complete Mahjong match spans 4 full rounds ( East → South → West → North ). By table etiquette, all four players remain until the North wind concludes.
-
The Winning Streak : As long as the active Host continues to win or draw, they retain the Host seat. The Wind Indicator only passes to the next player once the current Host loses a hand.
