A twist of fate that shifts the luck
The Role of Dice in Mahjong
In Mahjong, the dice roll is the very first spark of every round. It balances pure chance with calculated strategy, setting the table's momentum and deciding where fortune begins.
1. The First Throw: Choosing the Host ( 庄家 )

-
A single die is cast to determine who starts the match as the initial Host ( 庄家 ), taking the East seat. The Wind Indicator is then placed between the Host and the 4th player seated at North to anchor the table's orientation.

2. Breaking the Wall: 2-Dice vs. 3-Dice Methods

-
The Classic 2-Dice Method ( Anti-Cheat Tradition )
The Host casts two dice to count around the table and select which player's wall is targeted. That player then casts the dice a second time to determine the exact break point. This historic double-roll system was designed to eliminate loaded rolls and ensure complete fairness across the table.

The Modern 3-Dice Method ( Fast-Paced Gameplay )
A single cast of three dice by the Host directly determines both the targeted player's wall and the exact tile stack to break open, keeping gameplay smooth and swift.

3. Table Position & Marker

-
Between rounds, the Host keeps the dice placed alongside the Wind Indicator. This serves as a clear physical marker reminding all four players who holds the active starting seat.
